Brighter Than the Sun by Maya Banks – Katie’s Review

Why I read it

I have been following the Kelly clan since day one and love them all!

What I rated it

What it’s about

The Kelly Group International (KGI): A super-elite, top secret, family-run business.
Qualifications: High intelligence, rock-hard body, military background.
Mission: Hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering.
Handling jobs the U.S. government can’t…

As the last unattached member of the Kelly clan, Joe is more than ready to risk life and limb on any mission he’s assigned to, but when it comes to love, he’ll keep his distance. He’s content to watch his brothers become thoroughly domesticated.
Zoe’s had nothing but heartbreak in her life, and she’s determined to start over with a completely new identity, thanks to her college friend, Rusty Kelly. But it’s the gorgeous smile and tender words of Joe Kelly that begin to weaken her resolve to never risk her heart again. And Joe will have to put everything on the line to save Zoe, when secrets of her past resurface—and threaten to tear them apart…

Katie’s Review

This review was really hard for me to write. I spent more than a month contemplating what to even rate the book. On the one hand, there were some parts that I absolutely LOVED in this book! But there were other parts that had me double checking I was reading a KGI novel.

In most of the previous KGI books, and especially the ones involving the original Kelly siblings, there was a lot of action and danger involved in the storylines. I went into this book with that expectation, and that may be where I went wrong. I try really hard not to go into books with expectations, but I did with this book. Joe’s book was not heavily littered with action throughout the book, but the threat of danger was always looming, so I was still intrigued. At times, while I truly enjoyed the storyline, I felt like this could be from a different series. While it carried the signature Maya voice, the style was closer to some of her sweeter series.

That being said, I still really liked the book, and enjoyed it even more on the re-read I did prior to writing my review, knowing the flow of the storyline. Joe is just as sweet, overprotective and loving as his brothers, and I really loved watching his “downfall” as the last standing brother. He was patient, kind and in tune with Zoe.

Zoe, while she may have her secrets, is not about to share them with Joe, causing some great tension while reading the book. (I love a good tension plot line.) A few times I just wanted to shout out to her to trust him with her secrets!

Another great aspect of this book was the setup for Rusty’s eventual book. Tensions have never been higher between Sean and Rusty, and some parts, I felt the pages were ready to combust with the sexual tension! Maya has announced recently that Rusty will close out the series after another 3 books, so we all have a long time to wait!

Overall, I really liked the book, I would recommend it to any KGI or military romance fan, and I will be remembering Sweet Joe for a long time to come!
