Catch My Breath by Lynn Montagano — Becky’s Review

catch my breath review photo

Alastair Holden is British. Need I say more?

4 stars

Lia Meyers’ plan for a relaxing Scottish vacation is short-lived when one uncharacteristic moment of clumsiness lands her in the arms of her very own Knight in Shining Armani…

The perfect opportunity for a much needed holiday romance? Wrong! Lia’s still reeling from the mother of all bad breakups, and she really doesn’t have the patience for Alastair Holden – despite his effortless charm and cute British accent!

Arrogant and totally inscrutable, he’s exactly the sort of guy she wants to avoid but can’t: the man behind the mystery proves just too tempting to resist.

Drawn to him, Lia is forced to battle with her own insecurities, and the closer they become, the more she recognizes her own weaknesses as she peels away his layers with every night they spend together. Discovering the past Alastair is so desperate to conceal, Lia must decide if they can heal one another together or if their deepest fears will tear them apart.

I’d like to preface my review by stating the following: Alastair Holden is my new Book Boyfriend! Seriously, hands off, he’s mine. DIBS! Jamie Fraser, watch out – there’s a new red-headed literary lover taking over and his name is Alastair Holden!!

Catch My Breath, the first book in Lynn Montagano’s Breathless series has everything – a hot Brit, a feisty female lead, deranged exes and tortured pasts. Not to mention a smoking hot trans-continental romance. There are echoes of similar storylines, which makes reading it seem redundant at times but Lia and Alastair suck you into their relationship. After ending a volatile relationship, Lia is reluctant to get involved with anyone but Alastair manages to break down Lia’s defenses. Likewise, Alastair’s got his own hang-ups and Lia is constantly fighting for Alastair to confide in her and trust her by revealing his past. Their relationship is very much a game of tug-o-war: They both have to push and pull in order to truly get what they want and be happy.

I gave Catch my Breath 4 stars because the story is not completely original; it has echoes of similar storylines that I’ve previously read. There are also confusing bits as well. Alastair tends to run hot and cold and sometimes Lynn Montagano doesn’t do that great of a job explaining the shift in emotion. HOWEVER, I absolutely cannot wait to read the next two books because I want to know what’s going to happen with Alastair and Lia! Montagano does a great job of getting her readers to buy into this relationship. I am emotionally invested. So many of my favorite elements are in this book: the catty ex-girlfriend who thinks she’ll eventually wind up with Alastair (sorry honey, nice try!), the deranged ex-boyfriend who forces Alastair’s alpha to come out (Nothing makes me swoon more than having the alpha protect his woman), and a little bit of sass and snark to lighten the mood.

I absolutely cannot wait to dig in to the next installment of this series and I highly recommend that you one-click the heck out of this series!
