WHY I READ IT
It’s KA. Nothing more to be said!
WHAT I RATED IT
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
When small-town Nebraska sheriff Hixon Drake meets Greta Dare, the connection couldn’t be stronger, but the timing couldn’t be worse.
Dealing with the fallout of a divorce he never wanted and setting up a new home for his kids, Hix becomes that guy, that one he never wanted to be, and puts a stop to things before they can even start. Protecting his kids and himself is his only priority.
Greta, on the other hand, has found the place for her and the brother she adores that’s perfect for them – a sleepy little town in Nebraska. She’s learned from life that there are no hopes and dreams. The only thing to look forward to is peace. And that’s what she works hard to build for herself and her brother. Right up until Hix walks into her life.
Hix can’t fight the pull and stay away from Greta for long. And Greta’s finding it hard not to hope for something more with all the promise that is Hix.
But when the first murder that’s happened in over five decades rocks his small, sleepy county, Hix has got to learn to trust again, convince Greta to take a shot with him, and at the same time catch a killer.
In other words, things are definitely…Complicated.
*THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE AUDIO BOOK*
Ashley does it again! Complicated is classic KA! There was so much to like about this story, I’m not even sure where to start. It had all of the elements I love in Ashley’s stories. Broody, but sweet alpha male, and a take-no prisoners’ woman, who doesn’t need a man to be happy and is confident in herself. Throw in some great kids, a bitchy ex-wife, a brother who has suffered an unspeakable tragedy, and a murder in a town that hasn’t seen one in decades, and you have got yourself a fantastic romantic suspense story.
Hixon Drake was your perfect small-town sheriff. Recently divorced, he meets Greta Dare when she is singing at a local night club. Sparks fly, but Hix isn’t looking for anything serious. Even though their chemistry is not to be denied, Hix is hell bent on denying it. After an incredible night with Hix, Greta is ready to get back to her life, and focus on what’s important, namely, her brother Andy. But fate will not be denied, and Hixon and Greta will feel the pull that neither one can turn away from. Unfortunately, it’s not smooth sailing, and their road forward is bumpy, at times, downright dangerous. But it’s their road, and they are going to carve out their forever, however that may come. That’s the beauty of a KA story. These characters have to work for their happy ending. No silver platter here.
I loved the small town feel in this book. It made me long for the mountains of Colorado. So many of the townspeople were pulling for Greta and Hixon, even if they didn’t know where this entanglement was leading. They just wanted their sheriff and the local sweetheart to find happiness. From the moment this book started, it took off running and never let up. Every chapter, heck every page, brought a new development, and I couldn’t find out what was happening fast enough. Readers are going to love this book, and KA fans are going to love it even more.
I am a reader, and really enjoy spending time with the characters in a story, developing my own voice for each one. I go back and reread passages as I’m going through. I love highlighting my favorite parts and revisiting them. When the story is read to you, the dynamic of that story changes. I was concerned that I would find myself drifting, my mind wandering, and not be able to fall as into the story. I will listen to audio books, but only after reading the book. With Complicated being an Audible exclusive, listening was my only option. Carving out 18 hours of kid free time to listen wasn’t easy, but this book was worth every minute of it. I’ll be giving this a reread when the print version becomes available in November.
