Delayed Call by Toni Aleo – Jenn’s Review

The Assassins series is one of my all-time favorite series!

Vaughn Johansson is the Nashville Assassins’ star player. He’s brash, cocky, and talented. And he isn’t afraid to let anyone know it. He lives his life on his own terms, never forming romantic attachments, and only allowing his very closest to see his true, caring self.

Brie Soledad has the weight of the world on her shoulders. As the staff reporter for the Assassins, she balances her high-profile job and its heavy travel schedule with being the sole provider for her adult brother with Down syndrome. Sure, she’d like to find love. But who has time for that when there are bills to pay?

Brie has been the match to Vaughn’s gasoline since the day she first held out her microphone to him. They strike sparks off each other, keeping their friends, the team, and the Assassins fans in stitches. Brie’s refusal to fawn over Vaughn sets his teeth on edge and his blood boiling. Especially in that body part…

Brie’s been let down by love before, but she knows she deserves nothing less than real, forever love. Vaughn’s past has left deep, hidden scars, and there are some secrets he cannot bear to reveal. As much as Brie wants him, Vaughn may be too big a risk for her wary heart to take. But he is at his best under pressure. When the delayed call is in effect and he has no choice but to score, Vaughn always delivers.

Toni Aleo called Vaughn and Brie one of her favorite couples and books…. right up there with Shea and Ellie. I scoffed. Impossible! Shea and Ellie are the golden couple. The glue that holds the Assassins together. No one could even come close to touching them. In fact, I was insulted that Aleo even suggested it.

I was wrong.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Vaughn and Brie. I love a good hate-to-love story, but the way the two of them went at it in the previous book, Face-Off at the Altar, I thought that there was no way I would find them falling for each other believable. There was too much hatred there.

Again. I was wrong.

Vaughn and Brie weren’t just believable. They rocked my world, while breaking my heart, and gutting my soul. They made me believe that anything was possible. I was gripped by their story from the very first word. Both of them have much more in common than they think. There may not be two people more suited for each other than Vaughn and Brie… if only they could get their heads out of their asses and see it!

Vaughn and Brie can’t even be in the same room as each other without a verbal showdown… heck, it even got physical (and not the sexy kind) at one point! Each one of them had a comeback wittier than the next. Boy, were they funny. I was laughing so hard, I had tears running down my face. I was going back and rereading passages because I was laughing too hard to follow them. But you knew, you just knew, under all of that anger, a fiery passion was just waiting to burst free. This book was h.o.t. HOT! SO hot. Vaughn would whisper the most delicious things in Brie’s ear, and she would just melt. Who could blame her? The chemistry between them was explosive and authentic. I completely bought into the love/hate aspect of their relationship. After all, there is a fine line between love and hate.

Delayed Call wasn’t just sexy and funny. It was exceedingly emotional as well. Keep the tissues close by, because you are going to need them. Each time one of them would tell their story to the other, I actually teared up. Me! Crying in a book! Who would think? I hung on their every word, wishing I could take their pain away. They needed each other more than they could have imagined, but when you’ve been burned in the past, it’s hard to trust in the future. Just because Vaughn and Brie have all the chemistry in the world, doesn’t mean the demons from their past won’t get in the way, and when they do, get those tissues ready again. I could actually feel the pain in my heart from the devastation that was caused. I felt so broken, I didn’t think anything would make it right.

While this story was about Vaughn and Brie, we have so many new characters to fall in love with… Jensen, Wren, and Wells! I see more Assassins stories in my future, and I am positively giddy about them! You don’t have to have read the rest of the books in the series to enjoy this one, but it does help. I loved catching up with Ellie and Shea, and I love how my favorite Assassins couple were featured prominently alongside my new favorite couple. I have been an avid Aleo fan since she first published Taking Shots, and I can honestly say, she gets better and better with each book she publishes. Delayed Call is her best book yet, and I don’t think it can be topped. This is one book you do not want to pass up!
