Fighting Shadows by Aly Martinez – Jenn’s Review

fighting shadows

Aly Martinez is always a one-click for me. The first book in the series, Fighting Silence is a 2015 Top Reads.

I come from a family of fighters. I always thought I’d follow in their shadows, becoming unstoppable in the ring. That changed the day I saved the life of a woman I loved, but could never have.

My brother hailed me as a hero, and my reward was a wheelchair.

Paralyzed, my life became an inescapable nightmare.

Until I met her.

Ash Mabie had a heart-stopping smile and a laugh that numbed the rage and resentment brewing inside of me. She showed me that even the darkest night still had stars, and it didn’t matter one bit that you had to lie in the weeds to see them.

I was a jaded asshole who fell for a girl with a knack for running away. I couldn’t even walk but I would have spent a lifetime chasing her.

Now, I’m on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.

Fighting the shadows of our past.

Fighting to reclaim my future.

Fighting for her.

*It is HIGHLY recommended that you read Fighting Silence before starting Flint’s book.*

Already an Aly Martinez fan, I know I am going to get a brilliant story with well fleshed out characters and suburb writing. So, I shouldn’t be surprised when I am once again, knocked out by the incredibleness of Fighting Shadows. I say it with each release, but Aly has outdone herself this time, bringing us her best work to date.

“In my dreams you were walking.”
“In mine you stayed.”

Flint Page is Till sweet, younger brother in Fighting Silence, but he is ALL grown up now. Having endured a tragedy protecting who he believes to be the love of his life, Flint is now a bitter, frustrated, angry young man. In an effort to combat these feelings, he separates himself from his family, punishing both himself and his loved ones. It isn’t until Ash Mabie comes in to his life that he feels hope.

Ash Mabie is quite the character. She is not your conventional female lead and it really made her stand apart.  She spent her childhood as a con-artist, thanks to her scumbag father, but she’s not bitter. Ash is magnanimous. She is SO hilarious. She manages to bring humor to every situation, and the best? She’s not afraid to get in Flint’s grumpy face and attempt to get a smile out of him. I loved Ash’s quips. She brought light to what was a dark storyline.

After meeting in the most unconventional way, Flint and Ash embark on a whirlwind, four week romance, but don’t get comfy. Flint and Ash’s lives are about to be blown wide open. Is an attraction that lasted a month worth a second chance, if that second chance even comes to pass? That’s the ride we are taken on in Fighting Shadows. This is the story of two people on the road to redemption, who have to fight for everything they desire, including each other.
