WHAT I RATED IT
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Just when she thought things were going up…
Two years after a devastating breakup, Brittni Mitchell has moved on from Justin Avery—or so she tells herself. But when she returns to Seattle for her best friend’s engagement party, Brittni finds herself the victim of a disastrously timed elevator breakdown. She’s trapped with the last person she wants to face, and forced to recount the past she desperately wants to forget.
She’s going to have to look back…
When Brittni left her podunk hometown for a big city college experience at the University of Washington, hooking up with a guy like Justin Avery was not part of her plan. Between Justin’s attention-grabbing tattoos, cigarette smoking, and bad boy attitude Brittni quickly chalked him up as “Mr. Wrong.” But his charm was unrelenting, and Brittni’s decision to give Justin a chance quickly turned into the worst choice she ever made.
So that she might be able to move forward.
Now she’s stuck with Justin—literally—and the complicated web of misunderstandings that tied up the truth for two years is about to unravel.
Brittni and Justin had a whirlwind relationship for three months back in college that almost didn’t happen. For Justin, he was taken with Brittni from the moment she opened her mouth and showed her attitude. Brittni, on the other hand, was completely uninterested. It may have been the tattoos that screamed “bad boy” or the constant girls hanging all over him, but whatever it was, Brittni wanted no part of it. That is, until she showed up at an art show to support a friend of a friend and had her world rocked. The artist was Justin and that began the jumping off of the relationship. Three months later, it all came crashing down when egos and miscommunication got in the way. Without straightening it out, Brittni left school and moved 3,000 back home, never to speak to Justin again.
Flash forward two years. Brittni is back in Seattle for the wedding of her best friend, who is marrying Justin’s best friend. All she wanted to do was avoid Justin and get back home. What she didn’t expect was to be trapped, alone, in an elevator with Justin… for hours!
My favorite aspect of this story was the back and forth. We saw the present and the hostility radiating off each other, and then flashed back to the past as Brittni remembered it. The author did a wonderful job of showing how two people, both of whom were not looking for a relationship, slowly started to trust each other and fall in love. The tension and resentment was so powerful when Brittni and Justin were trapped together, all you wanted to know was what could have happened to two people who cared so deeply for each other a few short years ago, cause Justin to spew such hatred at Brittni the moment he spotted her. As the hours passed, and they began to open up with each other, you saw how one small miscommunication, that could have been corrected with one statement, snowballed into a horrible, public breakup and two years of misery.
This was a story of love, heartbreak and finding your way back. It was a beautiful showcase of how love can withstand time and hurt and become something to believe in again. I am a sucker for second chance romances and this one did not disappoint. I was finding ways to sneak in chapters all day until I could finish it. I really enjoyed looking back at how Brittni and Justin fell in love and that no matter the time or circumstances, that love never died. Misunderstandings is a definite MUST READ!
