Have you always wanted to be a writer?
I think I’ve always wanted to do something I loved, and writing is my passion. I’ve been writing short stories for years. I loved writing when I was younger in school, but I never enjoyed it as much as I do now.
Are you a full time writer? If so, what did you do in your “previous life?”
I am not. I would love to be a full time writer, but I worked really REALLY hard to get my degree. Besides writing, I work part-time as an x-ray tech. If I gave that up and focused solely on writing, I would lose my license. Plus, I enjoy doing both, my job and my passion.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give your younger self?
Those guys in school that are really funny, but you’re only friends with? Yeah, stick with those. Best Friends make the BEST husbands. The hot, cocky guys you’re looking at? They are all old and really, really unattrative now. Plus, they are probably still assholes.
Do you work on one storyline at a time or do you have multiple storylines in the pipeline?
I’ll plot out multiple books, but I only write one story at a time, especially if it’s a dual POV novel. My brain can only handle so many voices.
Let’s play favorites! Who is your favorite character you’ve written?
oooo… I really loved writing Reed (When I Fall). The reformed man-whore. It was fun knocking him on his ass and bringing Beth into his life.
Have you experienced any of your stories personally?
What are your biggest distractions?
Social media. My husband. My kids. Snacks. I’m easily distracted.
What is your least favorite part of the writing or publishing process?
Do you find it difficult, or challenging to write from the male POV?
I LOVE writing from the male POV. It’s my favorite. The only time it’s challenging is during a really emotional moment, because I don’t want to wuss them up, but I need them to react. There’s a tricky balance there.
What activities do you enjoy outside of writing?
Reading!! Which I rarely get to do anymore. I love spending time with my family, being outside, listening to music and just driving with no destination. I get a lot of book plotting done that way.
Do you have a favorite author or book?
This is completely out of my genre, but Cassandra Clare. I adore that woman’s writing, and her Infernal Devices series is my favorite series ever.
Ever think you have a great idea for a book, only to find out someone released the same storyline already?
All the time! It’s bound to happen. Lots of amazing minds out there.
Have you ever had writer’s block and how do you work through it?
I usually just step away from whatever it is I’m working on and take a day or two. I’ll distract myself with other things, or I’ll read something.
Do you ever find yourself jumping up from the dinner to table to jot down a scene that just ran through your head?
That hasn’t happened yet, but I have had to pull over on the side of the road and write something down.
What does your writing workspace look like?
Cluttered. Very, very cluttered. I need better organizational skills.
Sharing your baby with the public has to be scary. How do you respond to negative reviews?
I don’t read them. I use to, but I drove myself a little crazy doing that. I’m talking really, really negative reviews. If someone writes a review and they didn’t care for the book, and they put why they didn’t care for it and flesh it out for me, I read those. But if someone is strictly bashing me as an author or if it’s mean girl shit, I don’t read that. They usually start out a certain way so I just keep scrolling.
Do you have any visuals for your characters from any of your books?
I have visuals for all of my characters! For example, I am currently finishing up Sweet Obsession, Brooke and Mason’s story. My muse for Brooke has always been Sophia Bush, and my muse for Mason is Parker Hurley. I have photos of them around my desk for inspiration.
Can you tell us what you are working on next?
It’s a secret. 🙂
What is in your purse right now?
Lots of gum and mints. My wallet. Receipts I need to clean out of there. A notepad and pen. And I think about 30 tubes of chapstick.
Do you have a favorite scene or book of your own?
I don’t have a favorite book, but I do have a favorite scene. The restroom scene in When I Fall. 🙂
