The Score by Elle Kennedy – Jenn’s Review

The score review photo

LOVE the Off-Campus Series and couldn’t wait to get into Dean’s head!

5 stars

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she’s going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to befriends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

I have been loving Elle’s outstanding Off-Campus series since she gave us Garrett and Hannah in The Deal. The Score, book three in the series, is just as exceptional and it’s the next great book in an already fantastic line-up.

I love how you think you know a character when you meet them in a previous book. You know exactly what to expect from them. Then, Elle brings us their story and we discover that we don’t know anything! Dean Heywood-Di-Laurentis is just that kind of character. Everybody has the good-looking, hockey playing, man-whore all figured out, right? They couldn’t be more wrong. Not even Dean has Dean figured out.

Allie Hayes has finally ended her relationship with Sean, but unfortunately for Allie, Sean doesn’t agree. In order to keep her from doing something stupid, Allie’s friends convince her to get sneak away from her dorm and head to the safety of the hockey  house for the weekend. They are counting on Dean and Tucker to keep Allie hidden away from Sean. What they don’t count on is copious amounts of tequila, and the intense attraction between Dean and Allie.

The Score is a new-adult book, but it doesn’t necessarily follow the tired NA format. Over-confident guy who has woman throwing themselves at him with alarming regularity and a girl who wants no part of his whorish ways? Yup, this story has that. Luckily for us, it has SO MUCH MORE.

You actually watched Dean and Allie fall in love, moment by moment, scene by scene. There was never a time in this book that you were told or directed how to feel… you just felt their emotions as they did. It was all organic. Allie was so reluctant to give into what Dean wanted, but neither one of them could have been prepared for the explosion of feelings they were hit with. I wasn’t prepared for it. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, Elle gave us another twist or turn.

There were so many opportunities for this story to fall into the typical NA pattern and that just never happened.  The writing was fresh, the banter smart and engaging. We continue to see our friends from The Deal and The Score, and the relationships between the boys really helps to drive the story. When you read The Score, you are going to get a sweet a sexy couple, funny, supportive friends and top-notch writing and storytelling. In short, you are going to get everything you wanted in your latest escape from reality.
