The Spiral Down by Aly Martinez – Jenn’s Review

Aly Martinez is a favorite, and a must read….always!

I was afraid to fly.
He made me soar.

After years of climbing the ladder of success in the music industry, I finally had everything I could want.
Yet I still found myself wandering through life alone.

Captain Evan Roth was the one man I never saw coming.
Tall, dark, mysterious… Straight.

We were both damaged beyond repair and searching for something so elusive we weren’t sure it even existed.

But, when two broken souls collide in midair, falling is a given.

I just never expected to crave the spiral down.

Martinez’s first trip into the M/M genre is a complete success. If you have been a fan of her work in the past, but find yourself hesitant to pick up The Spiral Down because you haven’t yet read an m/m book yet, you will be missing out on a masterpiece of emotion and self discovery.

“Squirming under his gaze while standing in front of a sold-out crowd just became the most arousing experience of my life. And I knew he felt it too when a lazy smile played at the corner of his lips before his eyes swept back over me. Dear God. I didn’t have to f**k him to get the high. Evan Roth had just become my favorite drug of all and I hadn’t even tasted him yet.”

We first meet Henry in The Fall Up. These books have characters that carryover, but do standalone. You do not have to have read The Fall Up before The Spiral Down. You should though, because that book is incredible. Henry Alexander is the world’s biggest music star, but thankfully, he is sweet, funny, and totally grounded. His childhood was terrible, but he uses that to drive him, not bring him down. Henry is an openly gay man. Yet, his favorite pastime is seducing straight men into his bed. Why? Because they can’t leave him if they never intended to stay in the first place. When he meets his seriously sexy pilot in the midst of a panic attack, he knows his next conquest will be Evan, he just has no idea he about to have his world rocked. Their chemistry was just insane! I had goosebumps every time they looked at each other, and my stomach knotted up when they struggled to find the words they shared with each other. Martinez didn’t just tell you they had a connection, you felt it down to your soul.

“I f**king hated labels. Always had.
But maybe because no one had ever given me the right one.
At least not until that moment.
Gay. Straight. Bi. None of them fit me the way mine did rolling of Henry’s tongue.
Suddenly, it was the only label I’d ever wanted.”

Martinez never lets you down with her writing and character development. This wasn’t just Henry and Evan’s story, but everyone important to them played an integral part in driving the story forward. Henry is simply adorable. Even his panic attacks had me laughing out loud. Evan handled Henry the way no one had before, and you just knew, if the two of these men could get past the excessive amounts of baggage they both carried, their relationship could stand the test of time. The big question was, IF.

I have read every book Martinez has published, and they all sit on my all-time favorites list. The Spiral Down just cemented its spot among them. Do not let your concerns over an unfamiliar genre deter you. You are going to enjoy every gorgeous word.
