WHY I READ IT
I love M Leighton, and I loved the first book in the series!
WHAT I RATED IT
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
He’s a fighter who never loses, but is he tough enough to win her heart?
There was a time when I had everything–a wonderful family, a bright future. Love. But all that was taken away in a single night, torn from me like flesh from bone. Since then, I’ve hidden away in my second-choice job as a makeup artist. But I prefer it that way, actually. I’m comfortable in the shadows, where no one can see my scars.
Kiefer Rogan literally took my breath away the moment I met him. MMA champion-turned-actor, notorious playboy, charming to a fault—he’s everything I vowed to avoid.
But he just wouldn’t stop until I opened up and let him in. Maybe I should’ve tried harder to resist him. Maybe I shouldn’t have fallen in love with him. Because I, of all people, know that everyone has secrets. Scars. And that they’re usually ugly and painful and destructive to the people we love most.
I just never guessed that they could be deadly, too.
Tough Enough is the follow up to Strong Enough. Although this is a new couple, the books should be read in order due to continuation of plot lines.
Tough Enough sucked you in with the first sentence of the first paragraph. There is an incident that takes place right away, and you just know you will be hooked because you need to solve the mystery of what is happening! I loved how M jumped right in to the story, no introduction, and hooked you with her opening scene. You’re left thinking, “What the hell just happened?” She also does not tell you exactly who it was involving and what was happening in the opening scene. AS the story progresses, M has you making up your mind one minute, then changing it the next.
Although the book opens with a suspenseful action scene, the drama and suspense starts to take a back seat to the story of the relationship between Katie and Kiefer for the middle portion of the book. M has found a good balance in this book, many Suspense romances tend to focus on the action scenes and glaze over the romance and the connection of the characters; while others tend to write the romance well, but fall short on the action details, not doing their due diligence on research. But M has nailed this!
The relationship between Katie and Kiefer feels natural and progresses at a believable pace. She made me feel what the characters were feeling, and let their relationship flow naturally, never forced.
As we get later in the book, you still feel engaged in the love story, but you can start to feel the drama building. Tensions run high, and when the climax finally hits, BAM! The twist in the plot comes out of left field, blindsiding you.
I loved the setup for book three, and the continuation of the story of the men from their team continues. I cannot wait for book three to see where the story leads the boys of the special ops team next!
