WHY I READ IT
I was given the ARC by the author. I’m a RVD fan and having not read regency or historical novels in a long time, I wanted check this out.
WHAT I RATED IT
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Ashton Wolfsbane, Earl of Grimm, has taken a vow of celibacy after blaming himself for his sister in laws death. After a failed suicide attempt, he’s dedicated his life to bring justice to the weak making it his personal vendetta to be the death dealer to the wicked, also known as The Grimm Reaper. He denies himself lusts of the flesh and is known throughout London because of his ability to kill effortlessly and without emotion, that is until he meets Princess Sofia, a woman hell bent on making him forget all his reasons for denying himself the one thing he’s always craved—love.
After rescuing the fair damsel, he thinks his job finished, that is until he discovers he’s to be the Princess’s escort throughout London until she’s safely married. It wouldn’t be such a hardship, except the Princess has made him an offer he can’t refuse. Show her passion, real passion.
Three weeks of giving into the desire he’s suppressed for so long–three weeks of bliss and then they’ll go their separate ways. But things aren’t always what they seem, and when rescuing a damsel, or making a deal with her, one must always be prepared for the consequences.
Seven Royal Guard, an assasin, a kingdom in chaos, and a girl as pure as the driven snow…Will they find their Happily Ever After?
Ash was tormented by the death of the woman he loved, the woman who happened to be his twin’s wife. So tormented, that he immediately tries to end his life, but fails. He vows himself to celibacy. He has been successful for the past ten years…until he meets Sofia. He has been hired to protect her and is not happy when he needs to accompany her the next four weeks until she is married…to someone with a title. Sofia doesn’t know it but Ash has a title but has ignored it for years.
Hunter grinned knowingly. “She needs an English title husband, Lord Gyles.”
…”Lord Gyles is dead,” Ash whispered.
There is a real connection between the two and an instant attraction and when Sofia asks him to give up his vow and give her three weeks of passion he refuses…but she pushes…
“I’m a Russian princess. I want passion. If you won’t show me…then I’ll find someone that will.”
Ash does not like the sound of that but will he give into her?
This story has a good build on characters. Sofia knows what he wants and goes after it with Ash. He is immediately drawn to Sofia but has demons of his own to battle. Will they have a happily ever after? This story has the makings of a beautiful fairytale but will they have it? We have a mix of the wicked stepmother, 7 guards (dwarves), and the Princess and her “Prince” (or Earl in this case).
When Ash Falls is the first regency novel that I’ve read of Rachel Van Dyken. I haven’t read regency or historical novels in years but after reading 2 in the last week, I am going to start mixing more into my reading schedule.
If you love Rachel Van Dyken but haven’t read her regency novels, I recommend them. I find regency/historical novels to be my cozy reads and this did not disappoint.
